This land steeped in myth gifts us with cave monasteries long inhabited by hermits and religious pilgrims\, with the soaring wings of vultures\, Cretan sun and the Libyan sea. \nThroughout time and across cultures people have gone into the natural world to mark and celebrate significant life transitions. Vision fasts are modern day rites of passage that help navigate the complexity of these times; time away from the everyday\, making space and to connect with deeper purpose and wisdom to carry through life. \nAt the heart of our time together lies a four day solitary immersion into nature\, with minimal or no food – this is often a profound\, deeply nourishing and transformative experience for people. \nWhilst the solo fast itself will involve setting off alone into the stunning and varied local terrain\, our base camp accommodation\, where we will stay during the preparation and integration phases in a very small nearby village. The air that comes off the Atlantic here is so pure that rare mosses and lichens thrive and it is one of the few dark sky areas left in the UK. For those few people willing to pay the higher price to support others there is the option of three beds in the cosy and beautiful converted barn\, which we may also use for group sharing in case of inclement weather. \nTo keep the costs down and to build a sense of community we ask participants to pair up and bring ingredients to prepare one vegetarian meal during the retreat. We find our place in the way of things.\nIn this 10 day experience you will be invited to let go and find what you are seeking.\nThis quest takes place in a community of supportive women. You will spend 3 days in preparation: physically\, emotionally\, mentally and spiritually. You will then have the opportunity to go out on the land in your chosen spot to spend 3 days and nights with only the company of the “other than human” world. You will not be alone! When you return you will share your story with the circle\, and it will be mirrored by your guides to deepen it and help you see different perspectives. DESCRIPTION:Finding our medicine as women and female-identified people\, finding our voice and way as daughters\, mothers\, elders\, and stewards of this Earth at this time is essential.\n Feminine nature has been abused\, pillaged\, murdered\, kidnapped and sold for thousands of years.  Women carry heavy on the trauma their ancestral lineages have endured\, whether we are conscious of it or not.  Too many of us carry the blueprint of sexual and/or violent assault in our physical and/or ancestral bodies  informs and shapes us in more ways than we are consciously aware of.  As a result\, we may be more comfortable living in the masculine part of ourselves\, where we perform as best we know how in a dominance driven culture.   \nRemembering our birthright\, unearthing\, empowering and uplifting feminine nature within us and around us is as necessary for ourselves as it is for life on Earth.\nAlthough the feminine lives in exile in a culture that has forgotten how to nourish and tend instead of extract\, how to collaborate instead of compete\, we are innately connected to cyclical\, natural time – with every moon\, every cycle of our menses\, and in all life cycles of our fertility and beyond.  \nIn our time on the land and in circle\, we will invite and invoke the intuitive\, creative\, irrational\, deeply informed feminine nature within.  We will dare to unlearn the logic of colonial capitalism and unearth a deeper knowing of (and belonging to) the life-thriving paradigm that – no matter how much we fear we have lost it – still lives right beneath the surface skin of our homogenized cultured selves.  As with all ceremony\, we will do this not only for ourselves\, but for our kin\, our human and more-than-human communities and in honor of creation/life herself\, flowing in infinite forms through all manner of bodies. \nCome as you are. Meeting in Council circle\, sharing our intentions and fears with each other before the solo time\, each woman experiences for herself the complete freedom to say whatever she wants without fear of judgment or reprisal. \nAll beings have a relationship to Mother Earth. It has been widely recognized since ancient times and in cultures worldwide\, that the energy of the Earth is feminine and that of the Sky is masculine. I don’t know why. \nWhat I do know is that when I spend time alone on the Earth\, She feels like my true Mother. I lay on the ground and I am caressed and cradled to her Breast. I inhale deeply the scent of the sagebrush and I am Breathed by Her. I am fed by a view of the landscape and so She nourishes me in return. I hear birds cawing and singing\, twigs breaking\, a mole digging underground and I know that I am hearing Mother Earth speak to me. \nMother Earth teaches me that everything is connected. Women deserve this. \nThe Solo Quest Online Program Incorporates the Five Core Elements of a Wilderness Quest:\n1. Solitude\nYou will have a full day of solo time\, either sunrise to sundown\, or 24 hours. \n2. Immersion in Nature\nAn entire day is spent in nature–time for walking\, exploring\, sitting still\, journaling\, and enacting ceremony. \n3. Fasting\nFasting is an ancient cross-cultural practice\, one that opens the mind and heart. Most women are able to fast during the nature immersion time of the Solo Quest. This practice can be modified for those who cannot fast. \n4. Pan-cultural Teachings\nIn this program\, we will apply practices and teachings drawn from more than 40 years experience guiding rites of passage in nature\, including the Four Directions teachings (given to Rites of Passage by a Native American teacher); dialogue with the natural world; journaling; and other eco-psychological practices. We will also teach simple ceremonial practices that can be utilized by Solo Quest participants. \n5. Community\nTraditional rites of passage always take place in the context of community. Using the Four Shields of Human Nature as the template for wholeness\, we will spend solo time each day with a question that opens up communication with the natural world and reveals wisdom only nature can provide. Returning to the group\, we will learn to mirror each other’s stories\, reflecting the fullness that is seen in each story. \nMirroring is deep listening and reflecting that rises out of deep communion with the natural world. We see and are seen by Nature. We are given a story\, both very old and sparkling new. Mirroring is a way of seeing the wholeness in a person and reflecting back the gift they have just been given by Nature. In this retreat\, we will learn how to be our own mirror and be a mirror for others; and we will be mirrored by a person who serves as a clear mirror for others. Time will be given for creative expression of your story through nature craft\, ceremony\, writing\, song\, and movement.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in ceremony on the land with 8-10 other women of all ages living in beauty and rooting ourselves in safety\, allowing our hearts to open. The land offers us an experience of deep self care\, wisdom and compassion. We will have the opportunity to explore\, discover\, and renew our commitment to our own lives and life on Earth. The land and the ceremony heals\, strengthens and offers support. The places where we may feel disconnected\, unclear or bound can and do heal. We will have the opportunity to return as women living in ease\, with gentle humor and a sense of spaciousness. \nIn our experience\, spending intentional time on the land helps relieve fear\, anxiety\, stress\, worry\, anger\, etc. It enhances feelings of well-being and delight. As we attune ourselves with the earth and all of its inhabitants we begin to let go of the perceptions and attitudes that do not serve us well. We see ourselves reflected\, or mirrored\, by the trees\, the animals\, the rocks\, the sky. All levels of experience welcome\, scholarships available. \nI (Kelsie) will be on the two ten-day W.I.L.D. trips for fem-identified teens in 10th grade and up (in June and July). There are also a few shorter trips for younger teen girls and a number of trips for boys/masc-identified youth throughout the summer. While we unfortunately don’t yet have a fully gender-expansive trip option\, gender non-conforming youth are welcome in whichever trip they feel most drawn to\, and we guides are available to chat about where they’d be most supported. All the guides in the org are really talented\, amazing folks. \nWho we are:\nSince 2015\, Back to Earth has taken hundreds of teens and young adults on transformative adventures in wild places all over California. We teach skills that expand young people’s knowledge base and ability to care for themselves and each other. SUMMARY:Summer Wilderness Quest
DESCRIPTION:This nine-day Wilderness Quest will be held at Mono Basin\, a beautiful area east of Yosemite National Park. Rites of Passage has offered the Wilderness Quest\, which has its roots in pan-cultural ceremonies and teachings of the vision quest or vision fast\, for over 40 years. With a focus on reconnecting with nature\, finding authentic depth and meaning\, healing old wounds\, and marking significant life changes\, this program will appeal to adults of all genders in any life stage. The first 3 days will be Severance time\, or preparation for the solo\, as the group meets in Council sessions\, will exploring a range of topics related to the Wilderness Quest solo. Group members will find solo sites to hold them in the wilderness for three days and nights. Following the return from the solo\, the final three days will be devoted to preparing to return to the world in a fully conscious way\, carrying the gifts of the quest.

SUMMARY:Wilderness Vigil 2023
DESCRIPTION:The annual 2023 Wilderness Vigil is scheduled for this July on Saltspring Island\, in the Southern Gulf Island\, one of the gems of the Salish Sea.\nWe can accept a maximum of six fasters and generally expect a mixed group of age\, gender\, and sexual orientation. We follow the rite-of-passage protocol established by Steven Foster and Meredith Little and others at the School of Lost Borders. We are committed to a fee structure that makes the ceremony affordable to as many as possible\, setting a base rate to cover all expenses\, after which we request Dana (grateful offering) as a form of gift exchange. This year our base cost is $675.00 Canadian. \n

DESCRIPTION:Since time immemorial\, women have gathered to celebrate\, honor and support life. In doing so\nwe form a sisterhood deeply rooted in our own authentic nature. As we join together to share\nour stories across a spectrum of years\, we hear echoes of our own wisdom and intuitive\nknowing\, and we remind each other that we are enough; we are beautiful; we are powerfully\ncreative. \nRestoration\nIn this program we create a clearing in our lives to restore what has been forgotten\,\nfragmented or diminished. Ceremony invites us to take time to slow down and to find what we\nmay have lost in the frenetic pace and challenges of our daily lives. We pause. We listen. We\ntake notice of what is emerging through that body-sensing way of our feminine nature. \nRemembering\nWelcome to our intergenerational village! We do not go out to be tested\, to prove our\nworthiness or strength\, but rather to return to our natural rhythms and rootedness. We\nremember our essential nature as the wild humans we are\, empowered to trust our instincts\, unearthing the essence in our bones. In our blood we feel the yearning to trust our innate\nattunement and body wisdom\, letting go of the familiar habits of struggle and striving so we\ncan respond with relaxed strength and awareness. \nReconnection\nAs women\, we come together to renew our connection to the more than human world and to\nbetter understand our current life passage and stage of growth. Through immersion in wild\nnature\, the teachings of the Four Shields\, ritual and community\, we gain clarity on what is\nripening within us and ready to be revealed\, so that we may step more confidently into our\npotential and aliveness. As we nourish the inner well\, we discover our beauty. \nOverview\nThis 10-day vision fast ceremony\, led by two experienced guides\, involves four days of\npreparation\, three days of solo\, and three days of reincorporation\, to support and hold your\nemergence. Following a pan-cultural model of transitions\, this ceremony moves through the\nthree stages of severance (preparation) – threshold (solo) – reincorporation (return).\nLiving nature is your mirror and source of transformation\, and we will dive deep into this\nexploration of inner and outer communion. DESCRIPTION:Mid-life Crisis\, Post-Graduation Identity Crisis\, Post-Retirement Identity Crisis–household terms in our culture–how did the passage from one stage of\nlife to another come to be characterized as a crisis? Each stage of life contains within it an opportunity for growth\, change and a deepening of Soul. To pass from youth to adult is to acknowledge and take on certain rights\, responsibilities and most importantly a sense of one’s true destiny or mission in life. Mid-life can viewed as the true adulthood\, when human beings have the greatest opportunity to fulfill their dreams\, be of greatest value to the community\, become leaders\, and begin to understand more precisely the unique contribution they are capable of making. Elders may complete their missions and give back in a variety of unique ways. To honor such transitions and to help with the discovery of a truer and deeper Self is the core purpose of the Vision Quest Ceremony. \nHe not busy being born is busy dying. –Bob Dylan \nIn traditional and indigenous cultures ceremonies such as Vision Quest exist to help people to become more fully themselves. In the alone time of the Vision Quest a person communes with Spirit\, Nature\, and Inner Voice to bring forth a clearer and more powerful manifestation of True Self or Soul. With this vision of Soul a person can more beautifully and dynamically embrace the subsequent challenges of living life on life’s terms.
