Biographical Info

John has been leading nature-based rites of passage and related retreats since 1984. As a School of Lost Borders staff member, he leads retreats and trains guides.

As a professor at Naropa University for many years, he directed the MA programs in ecopsychology and transpersonal psychology and taught in the wilderness therapy program there. He has written a number of articles and book chapters related to wilderness rites of passage and the connections between the natural world, psyche, and spirit. A teacher of the Diamond Approach since 1983, he is the author of The Diamond Approach: An Introduction to the Teachings of A. H. Almaas (Shambhala Publications; now in 2nd edition). His Diamond in the Rough work integrates his passions for the School of Lost Borders' approach to “primitive ecopsychology” and the Diamond Approach.

Married and the father of three grown children and four grandchildren, John lives outside Boulder, Colorado. Along with his family, sitting on his porch, messing around in his back yard, and trail running give him great joy.
